Things I Don’t Admit Often #1

I like Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I don’t admit it often, because there are a lot of people out there who don’t like him — people who think he’s cheezy or overexposed or just obnoxious.  But I can’t help it. I like ‘im!  I don’t like everything he’s put together, and I know some of his stuff is obviously heavily influenced by other people, but you have to admit he’s been influenced by some really good stuff.

Jesus Christ Superstar has some honestly fantastic stuff in it.  So does Evita (while I’m admitting things, I totally dig the Madonna film version). And I don’t care how lame it is to admit it: I also totally love Cats.

There you go. I like Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I do not, however, enjoy Stephen Sondheim at all, with the exception of West Side Story (music by Leonard Bernstein), and Gypsy (music by Jule Styne).  There are a few bits in Sweeny Todd that I like, but they’re the songs that sound an awful lot like things in West Side Story

Into the Woods makes me want to kick a wall. Repeatedly.

You know, maybe if Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music and Sondheim wrote the words, it’d be okay, because I suppose I don’t mind Sondheim as a lyricist. I just hate his compositions.

About Me
Short, strange, and usually not very practical. I don't know if we're describing this page or the author.
